This 60 hectare domaine lies in the foothills of the Pyrénées, close to the village of Thuir, known to an earlier generation of drinkers for its production of “Byrrh”. On the plain, the soil is heavily pebbled “argilo-calcaire”, whereas the gentle surrounding slopes are more schistous. Yields are about 30h/h. Our initial interest in Jacques Bailbé’s wines was restricted to his wonderful old Vin Doux Naturel de Rivesaltes, fortified wine raised oxidatively in small barrels.
The 1945 (bottling in 2008) is gentle, spicy nose: pepper and rum. Strawberry and black pepper palate. Achingly long.
