Description

I recently bought this case of 12 bottles from a chap who's stepfather was a director of Harvey's and the Chairman of Cockburns. He was gifted it on retirement. My plan is to drink 6 bottles and offer the other 6 to you 'orrible lot.

The only thing identifying the bottles as '55 Mackenzie is a hand written note in sharpie pen on the case. There are no labels on the bottles (pretty sure there never were any labels). So I thought I'd better to the decent thing and open a bottle. Just to be sure, you understand.

Miracle of miracles, got the cork out in one piece. It's duly date stamped 1955, bottled 1957 - see pic 2. And wowee - what a fabulous bottle of port! It was much darker and generally youthful than I expected, and had quite the whiff of alcohol about it when opened. But after a couple of hours in the decanter in settled down into a wonderful expression of 1955 port, which in my humble opinion is a finer drinking vintage right now than the 1963. The bottle was everything you want form a '55 - candied cherries, plums and figs in abundance. It's smashing!

There doesn't appear to much, if any, bottle variation so I'll offer the 6 bottles for sale in separate auctions, and post them in the order they come out of the box. The bottles are hellish dark glass, but it looks like they all have that amazing level up into the neck. In fact, they were still wrapped in their original paper which is always reassuring as you can see at a glance whether there's been any seepage. Pleased to report there's been none :)
