"The 1978 Vargellas is a brilliant vintage for this wine. The bouquet is deep, complex and vibrant, as it soars from the glass in a mélange of cherry, caramelized banana, mint, smoke, fresh spearmint, nutmeg, tar, a lovely base of soil, and a violet top note. On the palate the wine is medium-full, deep and vibrant, with great intensity of flavor, superb focus, and great length and grip on the complex and very tangy finish. A brilliant wine that does not quite deliver the depth or breadth of a declared Taylor vintage, but in all other aspects is a worthy match. A stunning wine in full bloom, the 1978 Vargellas has years of life still ahead of it. 2007-2040."

"Medium ruby color. Lovely, softer, sweet nose offers more elegance than most others in this tasting. We like it a lot. Rich, complex, round, full-bodied, and youthful on entry with delicious, minty, dusty, sweet softness. At the same time, the 1978 has gorgeous plum / cherry fruit, with a bit of minerality. It’s perfectly balanced, a “complete” Port, with a very long finish featuring a tannic bite at the end. Drinking beautifully right now but not in danger of dying soon. Great stuff!"

"Very fine bottle of mature Taylor's Vargellas; great nose, full of raisins and prunes; elegance, not power dominates the character of this vintage; not sweet, a drier style of vintage port; lighter in style but I loved the nose; no harsh edges, pure velvet. very good, at this age! great way to finish the new years dinner!"
