At the end of the night, this was pulled on request, to pair with Cuban Cigars aged for 20 years. What a perfect combination. The wine sung with its pure black cherry liqueur, spice and chocolate character. Thick, rich, supple, long and warm, this was a treat. I'd drink Port more often if it did not require 60 years in a top vintage.

Bought as «Unknown Vintage Port» in a mixed VP lot. Opened to ‘celebrate’ our first snowstorm this season. Impossible to detect any clues from the broken wax seal or on the cork through the very dark glass. The message from the cork was clear enough “Taylor” on the one side, “1955” on the other.
Bright colour somewhere between tawny and ruby; the first sniff reveals Christmas spices, particularly cloves, a hint of fine brandy, layered, some dark berries indicate that this is certainly not a tired bottle; moderately sweet (in the region of spätlese sweetness), smooth, subdued, refined. Very, very long. An almost peacock tail finish with some alcohol, kept at an acceptable level.

2012 - Old: This is a extraordinary Taylor and it stands at the same level of 1955 Latour & 1961 Ducru at the same night. I wasn't impress by the bouquet at first, as the funky and fishy note masking the underlying fruits and spices as well as taken away the purity and balance of the wine. Decanted for 30 mins, and the funky and fishy note blew off. Oh my, wasn't this fantastic? Such elegant, complex note of spices, X'mas cake, sweet cherry fruits, preserved plum and savouriness. On the palate it boosted with energy, freshness and purity. These are the most important character for an old wine, at least to me. It didn't taste like a 57yrs old wine, I would have guessed this was from the 70s. The soft, mild inner perfume of floral and X'mas cake lingering from the entry to the finish, together with sweet plum and cherry fruits, firm but silky tannin that formed the perfect harmony, luscious mouth feel and leads to the endless finish. Port can hardly get better than this.

Magnums at EL Restaurant (EL Restaurant, Chicago, IL): Bright color, deep flavour, palate lasting over 60 seconds. Smooth with no bite. Delicious and full flavour.
