The Haags’ 2009 Braunebeger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese features northerly orchard fruits – notably pear, apple, and quince – though here, too, there is luscious, juicy, and zest pink grapefruit. Wet stone, iodine, and piquancy of fruit pit lend counterpoint, and the sense of seamless purity, buoyancy, and interactive vivacity are even more refined. The finish here is bell clear and inspiring harmonious. I would anticipate at least three decades of splendor. Oliver Haag picked from just before mid-October until November 10, and the resulting collection is most notable for stunning quality in its nobly sweet echelons, although the volume of each bottling is small (typically the equivalent of 200-300 full bottles) due to paucity of botrytis.
