2014 Iona Solace Syrah, Elgin

First vintage. Too good to blend into One Man Band. 100% biodynamic but not certified – for Iona's Rozy Gunn it's all about intent not formality. No enzymes, no cultured yeast. 500-litre Stockinger and 10% new oak. Quartzite and clay.
Sweet even if aim is northern Rhone. Fresh and lively. Smooth. Sui generis. Not like any other Syrah but very valid and a good wine! And so pure and youthful. Dry finish. Very much its own character. (JR)
2017 Iona Solace Syrah, Elgin
Jancis Robinson: 17.5/20
RS 2.5 g/l, TA 5.6 g/l, pH 3.42. This is a wine grown on the Brocha farm near Iona that was acquired by Rozy Gunn and her late first husband in 1999. Grapes spent 21 days on skins before being pressed and racked into 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-fill 500-litre French oak barrels where it spent 14 months.
Really lovely gentle complex nose – neither New World, nor Northern Rhône. Gentle tannins and lots of complexity. Impressively long. (JR)
