Description

FOR AUCTION: ONE BOTTLE OF 1945 CHATEAU PETRUS

This bottle of 1945 Petrus is being sold in excellent cellar condition for its age. As you can hopefully see from the pictures, the label is fully intact and showing the signs of cellar storage only. The capsule is also fully intact and showing no signs of corrosion. The level is excellent (base of neck/into neck).

Before 1945, Petrus was a fairly little known producer in Pomerol, which itself was a very small and relatively unknown/unfashionable appellation at the time. The immense release of the 1945 vintage from a tiny crop changed all this and established Petrus as the name it is today and went a long way to marking the status and profile of the tiny appellation of Pomerol itself. There really is no doubting or understating the significance of the 1945 vintage and its impact on the history of Chateau Petrus.

As you can imagine, this iconic bottle has attained some hefty praise over its life:

"While the 1947 Pétrus is a big, juicy, succulent, fruity wine, the 1945 remains a backward, tannic colossus needing another 5-10 years of cellaring. The color reveals more purple hues than the 1947, and the nose offers aromas of black fruits, licorice, truffles, and smoked meat. Massively-constituted, with formidably high tannin and extract levels, this sleeping giant may evolve into another perfect example of Pétrus". (Robert Parker - October 1994) 98/100

Wine Spectator:
Issue: Feb 15, 1991
Score: 100
I have only tasted a handful of wines as ripe and magnificent as this. It is so thick you can almost spread it with a knife; with wonderful chocolate, berry, earth and violet flavors.--Pétrus vertical. Drink now.

Cellartracker puts it at 97/100

It is difficult to place a value on a private sale of such a bottle, but I have set a reserve that is significantly below the current dealer value. The reserve is reflective of the rareness of the bottle and of course the condition, not to mention its place in history.

The bottle will be sent very securely packaged and fully insured, on receipt of cleared funds. Alternatively, collection in person is also welcome. I understand that the pictures on here are sometimes not the clearest, so if any prospective bidder wishes to see the pictures in greater clarity, please ask and I will send them. Please do not forget to include your email address.

Please note: if paying via paypal, 3.5% will be added to the final invoice amount to cover Paypal's modest charges.

Please see my feedback for testimony of my credentials as a seller on here. Please also see my other bottles for sale, including other bottles of Petrus from 1947, 1950 and 1961.
