Description
FOR SALE: TWO BOTTLES (TWO LOTS - ONE BOTTLE EACH LOT) OF 1947 CHATEAU PETRUS (in the pictures, the bottle to the left has been sold - the bottles for sale in this auction are the middle one and the bottle on the right)
Sold in superb cellar condition for its age, with the label, level and capsule all intact and with signs commensurate with excellent cellar storage only; these very rare and esteemed bottles has been very well looked after for the 60+ years of their life.
I purchased these bottles a few years ago from a dealer in Belgium who was charged with emptying and selling off a very old French cellar for the dependents of an old woman who recently died. Her husband died some years before and it was he who built up the collection of Petrus, Latour a Pomerol, Cheval Blanc, Lafleur and d'Yquem, all from vintages from 1918 to 1961. The dependents, who have no interest in the collection, requested that it be sold off in its entirety. The collection resided in a cellar in perfect conditions throughout its life and was never moved. I have been told it is almost certain that these bottles laid untouched and unmoved since release. Please see the pictures for evidence of condition of them. Please note that these bottles are Moueix negociant bottles. They are not chateau bottles.
1947 was an exceptional year for Pomerol and Bordeaux in general. Tasting notes for the 1947 Petrus as follows:
BOB:
100 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
January 1998
The 1947 Petrus is the most decadent "wine of the century." While not as port-like as the 1947 Cheval Blanc, it is a massive, unctuously-textured, viscous wine with amazing power, richness, and sweet fruit. The nose explodes from the glass, offering jammy fruit, smoke, and buttery caramel scents. The wine's viscosity is reminiscent of 10-W-40 motor oil. It is so sweet, thick, and rich one suspects a spoon could stand upright. The wine is loaded with dream-like quantities of fruit, as well as high alcohol, but there is no noticeable tannin. While drinkable now, given its amazing fruit extract, and high levels of glycerin and alcohol, it is capable of lasting two more decades. Tasted 11 Times With Consistent Notes.

A rich, massive wine, with opulent aromas and flavors of bitter chocolate, vanilla and earth, an extremely silky mouthfeel and an underlying ripeness of fruit that spellbinds.--Pétrus vertical. Drink
