Description

FOR SALE: ONE BOTTLE OF 1950 CHATEAU PETRUS

Sold in excellent condition for its age, with the label, level and capsule all intact with signs commensurate with age only; this very rare and esteemed bottle has been very well looked after for the 60 years of its life. You will note I have put the level as VTS, but for some, it could be construed as base of neck.

This bottle was cellar stored in France from release, nearly 60 years ago, until a couple of years ago, when I purchased it. The previous owners - the dependents of the deceased cellar owner, sold off the entire cellar contents. Until that point, this bottle (along with the rest of the cellar contents) resided in perfect cellar conditions throughout its life and was never moved. Please see the pictures for evidence of condition of this bottle.

1950 was an exceptional year for Pomerol. Tasting notes for the 1950 Petrus as follows:

99 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
January 1994
Tasted 3 Times With Consistent Notes It was the extraordinary 1950 Petrus, along with the 1950 Lafleur, first served to me years ago by Jean-Pierre Moueix, that made me realize how spectacular this vintage must have been in Pomerol. The wine is still a young, mammothly-constituted Petrus that is less evolved than more recent knock-out vintages such as 1961. Massive and rich, with spectacular color saturation and the sweet, unctuous texture Petrus obtains in ripe years, this wine will last for another 20-30 years.

99 points, Wine Spectator
February 1991
A truly great wine from an overlooked vintage. Amazingly young, from its undeveloped ruby color to its fresh flavors. Captivating, meaty cassis and berry aromas; full-bodied, with tons of velvety fruit flavors and a long finish. Superb.--Pétrus vertical. Drink now. –JS

Community Tasting Notes (average 96 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 2 notes)

Tasted by Samantha on 8/17/2009 & rated 98 points: Tasted so young, really big, rich beautiful wine. Well structured, soft tannins, hints of chocolate and dark fruit. Really fragrant and exotic, feminine seductive mouth feel and incredible finish. I usually prefer Burgundy but this was incredible. (338 views)

Tasted by Richard Jennings on 9/28/2003 & rated 94 points: Petrus 1921 - 1966, all the great years, in Magnum (Melisse Restaurant, Santa Monica, California): From magnum - surprised me with a buttered popcorn and vanilla nose. On the palate, however, it was powerful, with blackberries, cherries, coffee, good structure and a nice finish, although shorter than the finish on the '55 (417 views)

Vintage Tastings, Top 100 Weekend, Year II, 2005 (11/22/2005)
(Petrus) had the most exotic fruit of the flight, luscious and sweet, another version of chocolate sex. There was also gingerbread and heavy cream to its incredibly exotic nose. The palate was good but not as extraordinary as the nose indicated it could be; there were pleasant flavors of old wood and carob, but it lacked the craziness happening in the nose 93 points

I have set a reserve for this bottle that is both generous and extremely fair, given the rarity and prestige of this bottle.

The bottle will be sent very securely packaged and fully insured on receipt of cleared funds. Alternatively, collection in person would also be welcome. As would any inspection prior to bidding. I would be happy to send any pictures to you too - in case you wished to see the bottle in greater clarity.

Please ask me any questions you have. Please also see my other bottles for sale.
