Description

FOR SALE: ONE BOTTLE OF 1961 CHATEAU GISCOURS 3eme GRAND CRU CLASSE MARGAUX

Sold in good cellar condition, this rare bottle from one of the candidates for the greatest vintage of the 20th century, has been very stored in the cellar of a large Kent country house and is one of three bottles I have left of this wine. The bottle certainly shows signs of cellar life, with the label bin-soiled, with some nicks and tears. The casule is fully intact however and the level is very good for the age. The fabled 1961 vintage was nothing short of a glorious year and top Medoc growths from this vintage are now rare. This is a relatively inexpensive opportunity to sample an excellent wine from just about the finest vintage in living memory.

Please see the pictures of this bottle for evidence of the description - along with the original receipt of purchase by the buyer. (note the total cost of 48 bottles of top growth Bordeaux in 1971!). fRW are currently selling this bottle at just over £200 ex VAT. My reserve is below half this value, due to the bin-soiled label condition. Given the provenance and condition of the rest of this bottle, this is very fair indeed.

I have managed to locate a Parker review:

"This wine has held up nicely despite having been fully mature for well over 15 years. The color has lightened into a medium dusty ruby, but the rich, full, earthy, superripe, curranty bouquet is still lively and penetrating. In the mouth, the wine has the foursquare, beefy, chunky character that often characterizes Giscours, a certain tarry, slightly oxidized character, but finishes with plenty of richness and a heady alcohol content..." (Bordeaux book, 1998)

This bottle will be sent very securely packaged and fully insured, on receipt of cleared funds. Alternatively, the winner might like to arrange collection in person. This would be fine.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Please also see my other bottles for sale.
