Description

A fine 50 year old bottle of this famous First Growth, in good overall condition.

Level on the limit of 'base of neck'.
Label: As good as it gets after 50 years - see snaps.
Capsule: Very good order and certainly no signs of seepage.

Stephen Browett (Farr Vintner) comments 2014.

1966 Figeac - This has a deeper colour than the Conseillante. A fantastic nose that reminds me of La Mission Haut Brion - really tarry with spice and barbeque notes. Classic cigar box and cedar. The palate is rich and has a milk chocolate texture. Absolutely gorgeous and still has strength and power. A great Figeac that Hortense says was undrinkable for 20 years (it's her vintage but her father didn't let her try it until she was in her 20's)

Figeac, is a unique vineyard whose wines are often misunderstood, mainly because it was re-planted by Hortense's father , Thierry Manoncourt, (after the devastating 1956 frosts) with one third each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon, very unusual on the right bank, is planted in the highest and hottest parts of the vineyard. A consequence of this high proportion of Cabernet is that the wine tastes more firm and less opulent than its neighbours when young and is frequently under-estimated in its early life but, once mature, is often exceptional in quality.

Drank over 1 hour. Did not decant. Fill was top shoulder. The cork was soaked through but came out in one piece. Wonderful nose of sweet tobacco, mocha, smoke and green pepper. Perfectly balanced and a great creamy texture on the palate that matched the nose with some dark fruit and some chocolate notes. Very smooth medium finish. A really nice bottle of wine that may have been better a few years ago but it still a pleasure today.

Another great bottle that was consumed over 4 hours and kept improving with time in the glass. The green pepper notes fade while sweet black fruit, coffee and wood emerge and the palate takes on a fullness and creaminess. Nice.

Nose dominated by bell pepper and white pepper with hints of dry earth and old leather. Thin-ish on the palate, although this wine is still very much alive with a mid length finish of real substance. Decanted 30 minutes, consumed over the following 1.5 hours.

Mature and mellow nose, but without obvious fading. White pepper, red fruit and soil notes. Smooth on the palate with a stronger finish than the last bottle I experienced. Classic Figeac notes but softened somewhat with age. Consumed with partridge
