Description

According to the tasting notes below, the 1976 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild is possibly the greatest First-Growth wine of the 1970's decade and certainly the best bottle of claret produced in 1976:-

"This is the wine of the vintage. I love the rosewater, currants and citrus character to this now. It's still full body yet so ethereal. It goes on and on in the finish turning creamy and citrusy".
(96 Points).

James Suckling. (JamesSuckling.com October 2016).

"A sublime mature Lafite-Rothschild that alongside the 1978 counts as the best of the decade. A mature brick core. The nose is leafy and herbaceous with a touch of cigar box and smoke: unmistakably Pauillac. The medium-bodied palate is mellow, natural, and harmonious with cedar, tobacco and a touch of leather. Though there is just a residue of fruit, this Lafite is still imbued with remarkable precision and focus. Good length. For those seeking traditional claret from the top-drawer. Must be wine of the vintage. Tasted November 2006".
(94 Points).

Neal Martin. (The Wine Advocate. November 2006).

A recent tasting note on Cellartracker:-

"Got very lucky with this one; beautifully looked after - high shoulder fill, good cork, 2nd owner. Absolutely wonderful nose (taking 20 minutes to open fully and then lasting another 40 before a slow decline) full of cassis, pencil, black cherry, cigar, cedar, violets, leather that formed a seamless amalgam. Beautiful density on the nose with exquisite balance and elegance; fabulous, fine-boned claret. Very Lafite in character. More sanguine and mineral the more air it had.Less profound on the palate but still plenty of fruit; well-balanced.Long, positive finish. A lovely, completely resolved Lafite. Seize the day and drink these now - there's nowhere to go but downhill and it's in such a wonderful place".
(96 Points).

Englishman's Claret. (Cellartracker. 2/7/2016).
