In the 1970s,Domaine Bellicard d'Avignon was a Rhone based wine producer.Amongst the wines produced,it made wine from the Hermitage,Cote Rotie and Chateauneuf du Pape appellations.
I cannot find any current details about Bellicard d'Avignon,so the winery and vineyard may since have been taken over by another Rhone Domaine name.
The 1978 vintage was considered to be one of the greatest ever in Hermitage.According to Winesearcher,worldwide,both the 1978 Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle and the 1978 Chave Hermitage retail at an average price over £1,300 per bottle (ex tax).
Although an excellent vintage in Chateauneuf du Pape,1978 was not quite so good as in Hermitage...a bottle of 1978 Bellicard d'Avignon Chateauneuf du Pape was sold for a price of £62 on 9th June 2016 in a Lincolnshire auction.
Given the outstanding 1978 vintage,the great Hermitage appellation and the rarity,there is a fighting chance that this could be a superb bottle of wine.
