Description

A fine bottle of this 2nd Growth from 1979, so perhaps a 40th birthday in prospect?

A good, complete and unsullied label
An embossed capsule in perfect order and most importantly...
Level just into the neck...
Obviously well cellared.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The best of the 1979 St-Estephes, Cos d'Estournel has a dark ruby color, with a developing bouquet of ripe cherries, cassis, and some vanillin, oaky scents. Full, yet corpulent for the vintage, with surprising weight and depth, this wine has aged slowly. (RP) (1/1998)

Three stars from critic Michael Broadbent: "A heavy fairly localised storm during flowering severely reduced the crop. In cask (April 1980) even tougher than Montrose. It ameliorated through the 1980s. Its bouquet needs a little coaxing, but fragrant. Crisp fruit. Good wine." Praise from Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted blind at The Arches. The Cos d’Estournel ’79 has a very Pauillac-like bouquet with graphite and mint notes, the Cabernet Sauvignon firmly in control and offering a pleasing sense of symmetry. The palate is tannic and masculine, dry and a little austere and yet maintaining the harmony one would expect from a famous address as this." (07/2012)
