"Spain enjoyed a very good vintage in 1981,but as time has passed it has become apparent that Rioja had an exceptional year,in many cases equal to 1982".

"1981 was a great vintage in Rioja.At the time,it was somewhat overshadowed by 1982,but the wines have aged beautifully.I was lucky enough to drink Lopez de Heredia's Tondonia Gran Reserva 1981 and La Rioja Alta's 890 Gran Reserva 1981 very recently and both wines were magnificent - nowhere near full maturity.The Tondonia is more elegant and red fruited,while the La Rioja Alta is more masculine with hints of tobacco.Lopez de Heredia is famous for its aged Riojas and I would happily keep the 1981 for another 20 years.Stocks are dwindling,however,so now is the time to buy ahead of your birthday!".
