Description

Dating approximately from the year 1300,Chateau Pape Clement is the oldest planted vineyard in the Bordeaux region.Pape-Clément's history dates back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, the archbishop of Bordeaux, received the land as a gift. Elected pope in 1306, he took the name of Clément V and renamed his property Pape Clément, subsequently leaving it to the Bordeaux clergy, who kept the production for their own consumption. The prestigious red wine from Pape Clement (now part of the Pessac-Leognan region) is now considered on a par with a Bordeaux Second-Growth wine.

Intially,Pape Clement was not acclaimed in the magnificent 1982 Bordeaux vintage, but with maturity,as evidenced by the recent tasting notes (below) on Cellartracker, the historic vineyard terroir and the exceptional quality of the vintage are now beginning to shine through:-

"Dark brick-red, with an amber hue. Intense wet leaf and dust aromas, with hints of ripe fruit. Medium-bodied,with fine tannins and good berry, tobacco flavors".
(88 Points).

James Suckling. (The Wine Spectator. 1982 Bordeaux Horizontal. November 1998).

"Tasted blind. Rich and concentrated with just a faint (enjoyable) barnyard hint along with earth, mushroom and smoked meat. Very good balance and length. I haven't had this wine in many years, and it was much better today vs what I remember from a decade+ ago. Served alongside the 1997".
(93 Points).

BURGUNDY AL. (Cellartracker. 2/12/2017).

"Served blind and next to the '97 Pape Clement. Gorgeous broad nose that has dried plum, horsey notes and earth tones. The palate is complex and still fresh. Big burst of flavor and concentration on the mid-palate. Terrific showing".
(93 Points).

NANDA. (Cellartracker. 2/12/2017)

"Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red/purple center with orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed cherries, honey, roasted meat, and soil.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with attractive richness, moderate acidity, and good length.

While not a blow-away wine, this is attractive and delivers a nice 1982 experience after 3+ hours in a decanter".
(92 Points).

FCLARITY. (Cellartracker. 2/1/2016).
