Description

"This is one of the leading Crus of the St.Christophe area of St.Emilion.The wines have a long-established reputation in the UK and are consistently well made, with 25% new oak in the elevage - 60% Merlot,30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
They are solid and full-flavoured and attractively fruity, but usually rather coarse-grained,a feature which distinguishes even the most carefully made wines from the less good soils from those around the town of St.Emilion,on its "plateau et cote".For many years run meticulously by Charles Bygodt".

David Peppercorn ("Bordeaux".Second Edition. Describing Chateau Fombrauge in St.Emilion).

Charles Bygodt sold Chateau Fombrauge in 1987 and it is now run by Michel Rolland, probably the world's best known winemaker.

My recent tasting note on the 1983 Fombrauge:-

"Smoky, herby, iron filings, truffles, red plums on the nose. The palate has a strong acidic (spicy) backbone, which gives the wine weight and length,a minty, curranty, savoury mid palate, with firm tannins and a long lingering finish, still attractive at 35 years of age".
(87 Points).

Topterroir. (26/5/2018).
