Description

A good looking bottle of this 2nd Growth from 1983.

The level is at Base of Neck, commensurate with age.

Plenty of older commentaries on the internet but two perhaps more relevant notes as below from Cellartracker :

11/12/2016 - JULIANSKEELS WROTE: 90 Points
I haven't added a note on this in 3yrs, but after getting through a pristine case this seems to be deteriorating (and lesser bottles will certainly need to be finished). Initially all tertiary, wet leaves and acidic this needs 4hr slow ox or 1hr in a decanter to open to red fruit, cedar and lots of rich tertiary (mushroom, leather). Little primary left here and like '83s this becomes somewhat drying with too much air, when smoke and coffee dominates the remaining fruit. Rustic but rich with air. Drink up to enjoy at peak, but will hold to 2025. 90pts
Delightful mature Bordeaux--classic well-stored 80's St. Julien with red fruit and cedar.

8/24/2016 - WILLIAM KELLEY LIKES THIS WINE: 91 Points
The '83 Léoville Barton is one of the last vintages in the 'old style' at this address, as if I recall correctly new oak made an appearance in the cellar with the '85 vintage, whereas this wine was raised in entirely used barrels. As a result the '83s fruit tones—red cherry, dried currants—are a bit more prominent, with just a subtle background of herbs and woodsmoke, as opposed to the rather more creamy, cedary profile one finds from '85 on. Supple and fully mature on the palate. An attractive but rustic claret at peak maturity.
