Description

The last three tasting notes on the 1985 Gruaud Larose on Cellartracker:-

"Fantastic bottle that kept developing in the glass well over three hours. A lot of gunk under the cap and the cork was soaked but the wine was perfect. Mature with sandy tannins and notes of rust, matchbox, green peppers but with the fruit to back it up. Nowhere near going downhill but I can't imagine it'll get any better!".
(94 Points).

Matage. (Cellartracker. 13/4/2018).

"This is why first and second growth Bordeauxs get the high bucks. They age well and have a wide drinking window. Great colour with no browning on the edges. A long, long finish. The cork was thoroughly saturated, but with no ill effects. Not full bodied, but smooth and mouth coating. As Parker proposes, a First Growth".
(95 Points).

JACKAROO. (Cellartracker. 13/4/2018).

"Very dark red color, 5mm transition. Decanted for 90 minutes, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Wow, this was good to go, pencil, leather, sandalwood, raspberry, red berries, wet earth; a wow nose. The palate is medium bodied, feminine, the perfume carries through on the palate, flower to the gills, great purity, so well evolved and fine tobacco, layers of red fruit and complexity, very long and integrated. This has easily got another 10 years".
(95+ Points).

ROCKNROLLER. (12/2/2018).

"Tasted at The Ledbury Gruaud Larose lunch, the 1985 is a lovely Saint Julien although it is not quite as convincing as it was five or six years ago. It is still remarkably tight on the nose and it takes ten or fifteen minutes to unwind. It blossoms nicely with tertiary aromas, cloves, brown sugar and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of brettanomyces perhaps. I like the acidity here that seems completely in synch with the fruit, touches of rosemary and dried blood inflecting the decayed red fruits with a long, languorous finish. Lovely. A point".
(92 Points).
