Description

Chateau L’Evangile's 35 acre vineyard is brilliantly situated on deep, gravelly soil, mixed with both clay and sand on the border of the Saint Emilion region, along with a few other prestigious wineries such as Chateau Petrus,Chateau La Conseillante and Chateau Cheval Blanc. It was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild in 1990,also owners of the esteemed Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
This is a small production, highly sought-after Pomerol and in top vintages,Chateau L'Evangile wines sell for very high prices.According to Winesearcher, the average retail price for the 1982 L'Evangile is at least £500.00.
As Robert Parker states below,Pomerol was the best performing appellation in Bordeaux in the 1987 vintage and thus Chateau L'Evangile's 1987 rivalled the quality of their wines from the good vintages of 1986 and 1988.

"The year 1987 is the most underrated vintage of the decade for those estates where a strict selection was made and the Merlot was harvested in sound condition. The wines are deliciously fruity, forward, clean, fat, and soft, without any degree of rot. This is a vintage that I search out at restaurant wine lists".

Robert Parker. (Bordeaux Book. Third Edition).

"Pomerol enjoyed more success in the 1987 vintage than any other appellation. L'Evangile's 1987 is a plump, tasty, well-colored wine with fine ripeness, a supple texture, and a satiny smooth finish. It rivals the 1988 and 1986".

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. June 1993).
