Below Robert Parker's appreciations of this very fine wine:
Bordeaux Book, 4th Edition
Jan 2003 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 92 Drink: 2003 - 2016
For a vintage that has significantly less acclaim than 1989 or 1990, Certan de May produced a far better, more concentrated and complete wine in 1988 than in the two subsequent years. Still a dense garnet/ruby/purple with no amber at all, the aromatics offer up notes of truffle, licorice, compost, cedar, black currant, and cherry. The wine is very concentrated, powerful, muscular, and still youthful. With good underlying acidity, firm tannin, and a full-bodied, concentrated feel. The wine has a firmness but not any astringency. This is certainly one of the vintage’s most successful wines. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016. Last tasted, 10/02.
Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition
Jan 1998 Robert M. Parker, Jr. 92 Drink: 2000 - 2015
Certan de May has turned out a muscular, powerful, deep ruby/purple-coloured wine that exhibits little evolution at almost ten years of age. The wine holds exceptional promise given its tobacco leaf, spicy, cedary, black cherry and currant-scented nose. Roasted herb/meaty, fleshy, full-bodied flavours continue to border on the exotic. This is an intense, rich, long-lived style of wine that still requires bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015. Last tasted 10/97
