Description

1990 was a great vintage in the Yarra Valley and Dr.Bailey Carrodus, the great visionary, was still in charge of winemaking at Yarra Yering.
The wines at Yarra Yering are grown without irrigation, and this combined with judicious mid row cultivation has driven the roots deep into the gravelly soil. The yield is consequently low,1-2 tons per acre, resulting in fruit with great intensity and concentration of flavour, and with an abundance of natural acidity.
I cannot find too many tasting notes on the 1990 Underhill Shiraz,as this was before Robert Parker appreciated the superb quality of the top Australian wines and did not provide tasting notes of their wines.
However, the last two tasting notes on the 1990 Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz on CellarTracker are as follows:-

"One of the best Shiraz I have had from Oz.Lovely fading red colour in the glass, wonderful nose - fully resolved on the palate with a very long finish - lots of complexity and flavours to interest, hard not to love".
(92 Points).

CellarTracker. (8/1/2011).

"Right after decanting to remove sediment I took a whiff and said "strawberries and cream".Interesting! With a few minutes aeration in the glass,it showed a nose of lavender, mountain herbs, licorice and vanilla as well.On the palate, roasted nuts,a touch of coffee perhaps, blackberries, good structure and body and a good long finish.
With an hour or so in the glass the flavors came to the fore and the nose was showing more black pepper and spice, and in the mouth, truffles.
This is not a bowl-over wine; it's quite elegant and restrained.The nose,in particular,while complex,needed time.
But excellent stuff!".
(93 Points).

CellarTracker. (18/7/2005).
