Description

"Where producers in Cote Rotie,Hermitage,Cornas and the other appellations had low yields and made concentrated wines, some exceptional wines were produced that will be inaccessible young, but long-lived and potentially profound".
"The 1996 Cote Rotie La Landonne may merit an outstanding score if the tannin melts away without any proportional loss of fruit. The wine was backward and closed when I tasted it in late fall,1998.The wine's dark ruby color with purple nuances is followed by reticent aromas of smoke, roasted meat, earthy iron, and herb notes. It is sweet on the attack, with excellent length, medium to full-body,with a boat-load of tannin. While the tannin gives the wine good grip,it also is a cause of concern about the wine's equilibrium. My instincts suggest it will be fine, but it requires 3-4 years of cellaring".
(88 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #121.February 1999. Describing the 1996 vintage).

There don't appear to be many tasting notes available on the 1996 La Viaillere - one of the few tasting notes on CellarTracker:-

"I have pretty much resolved that good calibre northern Rhone wines from cooler, classic vintages simply needs 15 years to be optimum,at least for me.So it was with the 1996 Rostaing La Viaillere. We decanted it,and finally in the third hour it came alive with olivey, ashy, slightly leathery thrusty acids and nice, though not heavy mentholation.I'm not a huge fan of decanting and just think you're pushing the wine towards an optimum state it's not really ready for".

Cellartracker. (5/6/2008).
