Description

The lot consists of three bottles of 1996 Australian Shiraz, all with wine fills into neck:

One bottle of 1996 Jim Barry McCrae Wood Shiraz (Clare Valley).
One bottle of 1996 David Wynn Patriarch Shiraz (Eden Valley).
One bottle of 1996 Hardy's Eileen Hardy Shiraz (McClaren Vale - Padthaway)

In 1964,Jim Barry purchased 70 acres of prime land from Duncan McCrae Wood and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of both grape variety and location.
A full red-purple wine, the 1996 McCrae Wood Shiraz has a fragrant aroma of mint, red berry and nicely controlled oak.The well-balanced palate has dark berry fruits with tangy notes throughout; a good acidity maintaining a long length on the finish.

1996 was an excellent vintage in the Eden Valley and Wynn's Patriarch Shiraz had a high alcohol level of 15%,reflecting the superb vintage.
The wine is sourced from the richest parcels of Shiraz fruit in the David Wynn vineyards in the Eden Valley and matured in both new French and American oak barriques.

The 1996 Eileen Hardy Shiraz won a Gold Medal at the Royal Adelaide Wine show and also at the Royal Hobart Wine show.
A CellarTracker tasting note on this wine:-

"Developing, but still rather youthful aromas of liquorice, blackberries and vanilla US oak.A powerhouse but not raucous palate of rich fruits (per the aromas) with no stale raisiny characters,Full-bodied,with medium weight powdery tannins and great intensity of flavour, the partly-evolved ripe fruit flavours coat the full length of the palate.Maybe the slightly harder/cooler edge to the Padthaway fruit really bolsters the McLaren Vale component? At any rate, they work well together.Wine-of-the-Night for many, this ought to sail through another ten years of development easily.Triumphant wine showcasing the best of regional blending".
