Description
One bottle of the second wine from Haut Brion - 1st Growth.
From a meticulous cellar and in perfect condition.
Readers looking for the taste of Haut-Brion for about one-third the price should check out the 1998 Bahans Haut-Brion. It possesses a scorched earth, mineral, smoky, red and black currant-scented bouquet, terrific complexity, purity and elegance, and a harmonious palate. The finish is slightly tannic. This is a serious effort that should age well for 12+ years. Last tasted, 3/02.
Score: 88 Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003
This is a terrific, deep ruby/purple-coloured effort with good structure as well as gorgeous ripe black fruit, mineral, and smoky characteristics.
Score: 90/91 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (128), April 2000
Rather muted nose. Minerals and refinement. Polished. A little hard work but absolutely classic.
Score: 90/94 James Suckling, Wine Spectator
The second wine of Haut Brion. Plenty of depth here and quite sweet in the middle with a kick of tannin in the tail.

Typical earthiness of a PL, with a good attack of redcurrants and an impressive second wave of cherry which lifts the wine to the top of the palate. Very enjoyable but just a little lacking in complexity for greatness.

Cloudy ruby-purple; nose of clove, cassis-blackberry, black cherry and pit, smoke, light forest floor and spices; Pretty fresh but well aged and just starting it's older life; very well-balanced on the palate with great berry and exotic spices notes, good lift and full dry tannins; quite long. Really nice, still feels youthful with a slight softening on the palate and good integration. Excellent. 92+

First glass of this bottle was drunk alongside the last glass of a bottle of the 1989 Bahans. This wine -- firm, clean, sharp colour; similar nose to the '89 with prunes, tobacco and minerals, but on the palate not yet as sweet, and acidity still prominent. Fine but significant tannins appear after an hour. Good length. Another 2-3 years required, and needs decanting next time. A very fine second wine still in development. Augurs well for the Grand Vin, which was however very unfriendly when last opened 18 months ago.

I stupidly opened this one without reading my own note. I don't agree with the folks that say this one is ready to go. Three hours open and this is still super tight. The tannins have softened, but seems like a lot of energy in this wine that still needs another couple years. Wish I had buried this bottle in my cellar, because I think this will be a very elegant yet powerful wine... Just not mature yet.
