The second wine of Haut-Brion is a stunner and has one of the best track records of any second wine in Bordeaux, (the 1989 is widely regarded as the finest second wine ever produced).
Much of Haut-Brion's unique terroir comes across in this earlier maturing style, and with one of Bordeaux's greatest winemaking teams behind it, the wine is complex and long-lived. Originally known as Bahans Haut-Brion, this is now called Le Clarence de Haut-Brion.

The 2000 Bahans Haut-Brion is fully mature, but I had indicated that back in 2003, giving it an anticipated maturity date of 2005-2016. Its smoky, soft berry fruit and notes of fresh porcini mushrooms intermixed with cigar tobacco and black currants are complex. This complexity is followed by a fleshy, elegant, silky wine to drink over the next 5-6 years. Haut-Brion can be among the trickiest Bordeaux to taste young, often needing a full decade before the extraordinary complexity that marks this terroir begins to emerge. I was thrilled to see how well both the second wine, Bahans Haut-Brion, and Haut-Brion performed in this tasting, and both scores are slight upgrades. (6/ 2010)

Good ruby-red. Smoky raspberry, ripe plum, coffee and a hint of menthol on the nose. Very sweet, fruit-driven wine, with thoroughly ripe flavors of raspberry and chocolate supported by solid backbone. Finishes with big, dusty tannins and excellent length. (6/ 2003)
