Description

"2000 Bordeaux wine continues to hold on to its legendary status. It’s important to keep in mind,2000 Bordeaux wine was the first perfect vintage for both banks in a decade. You have to go back to 1990 to find a year that excelled in the Medoc,Pomerol,St.Emilion and Pessac Leognan. Many chateaux in the smaller Bordeaux, satellite appellations also produced some of the best wines of their career.2000 Bordeaux wine was great from top to bottom. For that reason,2000 Bordeaux was expensive the day it was first offered.Yet even though 2000 Bordeaux was the most expensive vintage ever offered as futures in its day, prices have continued climbing".

The Wine Cellar Insider. (Review of the 2000 Vintage in Bordeaux).

Because of the tiny (7 hectares, close to Chateau Gazin) high-quality production, the prices of bottles from the petit Pomerol Chateaux, such as Le Caillou sell at much higher levels than left-bank Cru Bourgeois wines.According to Winesearcher, there is only one retailer left (from California) selling Chateau Le Caillou from the outstanding 2000 vintage at a price of US$64.99 per bottle, with tasting notes as follows:-

"Concentrated hue, garnet tints.Ultra ripe nose with soft oak and redcurrant, cassis and raspberry presence. The palate seems very mature and framed by a sappy range of fruit aromas. A Pomerol with good breeding,as precise as it is sensual. Ready now".

My own notes from a recent tasting of Chateau Le Caillou 2000 (grape varieties are 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc) :-

"Deep colour, cigar box, smoky, earthy, blackcurrants, black cherries. On the palate...cedar,plums,leafy blackcurrants, with strong influence of the Cabernet Franc grape, herbaceous with good minerality.I noticed additional length with further decanting".
(90-91 Points).
