Description

The 2002 Rustenberg John X Merriman is from South Africa's Stellenbosch region. This is made from 51% Cabernet Sauvignon,46% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, and matured in French oak barriques (50% new) for 20 months.
The wine commemorates John Xavier Merriman,Cape Parliamentarian,Minister of Agriculture, and Prime Minister of South Africa. He bought the Rustenberg farm in 1892 in sympathy with farmers suffering from the phylloxera crisis and played a great role in revitalising the vineyard.
The 2002 vintage in Stellenbosch was challenging,as the growing season was cold and wet. However,it was saved by a hot,dry harvesting period and the patience of the Rustenberg vineyard was rewarded by picking the ripe grapes a bit later than usual. The result was ripe, flavoursome wines at lower alcohols, thanks to rigorous bunch selection in the vineyard and careful blending in the cellar.

The 2002 Rustenberg John X Merriman was awarded a Silver Medal at both the 2005 International Wine Challenge and also at the 2005 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.
John Platter (the famous South African wine guru) awarded this wine with 4 1/2 out of 5 Stars in his Platter's South African Wine Guide.

Unable to find out a great deal about the 2002 Rustenberg John X Merriman, but six bottles of this wine sold at auction recently (13/11/2018) for £260.00.

Rustenberg's own tasting notes on this wine:-

"Well rounded wine, which will increase in complexity and character with bottle age,as is customary with Rustenberg's red wines.Aromas of spice and red fruit, balanced by fine, elegant tannins - a combination which is indicative of well managed vineyards and mature fruit.Should be decanted before serving".

The last tasting note on the 2002 John X Merriman wine on Cellartracker:-

"I was harsh on this. Developing a nice graphite edge, cassis palate and a nice weightlessness and balance".
(92 Points).
