Abounds with soft and warm black fruits followed by fine, ripe and gently persistent tannins from the mid-palate through to the finish. Quality French oak rounds the wine off.
Arguably the most interesting of all new wineries to be announced in Australia over the past few years. Its partners are Brian Croser of Petaluma, Jean-Michel Cazes of Chateau Lynch-Bages in Pauillac and Societe Jaques Bollinger, the parent company of Champagne Bollinger. The core of the business is the Koppamurra vineyard acquired from Koppamurra Wines prior to the 2003 vintage.

Very smooth textured with some fruit sweetness, and nice creamy, spicy notes. The striking aspect is the smooth, silky, tannic structure. It’s really elegant, and it will be interesting to see how this wine evolves. It isn't an obviously Australian wine, while at the same time you wouldn't place it in Europe. Smooth and elegant is how I'd describe it. Very good/excellent

I'm enormously enthusiastic about Brian Croser's new Tapanappa venture (which will unite a number of 'sites of distinction', including those beyond Australia's borders, in due course), and the Whalebone Vineyard from Wrattonbully (formerly Koppamurra) makes a fine foundation stone. Brian is always looking for length rather than breadth and some have criticised him for going too far in that direction. This wine is perfectly pitched, it seems to me, between those two planes: the fruit qualities are outstanding, with a helix of ripenesss turning at the wine's core; acutely judged tannins, too, purring in the background. It is (as its geographical position between Coonawarra and Padthaway suggests) a kind of Coonawarra refocussed, with the wind-harried blade of acidity draped in velvet and a little more old-continent generosity in evidence.
