Description

Chateau de Francs is a joint venture between Dominique Hebrard (previous owner of Chateau Cheval Blanc) and Hubert de Bouard (owner of Chateau Angelus). The Chateau is one of the oldest properties in the Bordeaux region, with a history that dates back almost 2,000 years.
The 40 hectare (2.5 hectares white) vineyard was bought by the current owners 20 years ago and the age of the vines is 40 years. The soil is clay/limestone,being the same as that found on the St.Emilion plateau. The vineyard is planted to 70% Merlot,20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of tank and barrel, evenly split.50% of the barrels are new.

"What's so striking about 2009 - and I haven't seen this sort of excitement since 1982 - is the quality of the Cru Bourgeois and the petit vins and the generic Bordeaux that are available. In short,2009 is the greatest vintage I have tasted in Bordeaux since 1982,of which it is a modern-day version but greatly improved.
Just like in 1990 and 1982,the low acidity, the very ripe fruit, the high glycerin levels from the elevated alcohols, and the stunning concentration and fruit from low yields will give most of these wines incredible appeal in their youth".

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #188. April 2010).

The 2009 Chateau de Francs won a Gold Medal at the Concours de Bordeaux Vins D'Aquitaine in 2011.The alcohol level is a very high 15% for a Bordeaux wine (see RP's comments above).

Good vintages of this wine are very difficult to find in this country...only one retailer in the UK is selling this wine at £12.99 a bottle (but the far lesser 2013 vintage).
