Description

In June 2014,I made a visit to Chateau Pontet-Canet and together with the winemaker Jean-Michel Comme and the proprietor Alfred Tesseron was able to taste several of the Pontet-Canet wines out of bottle.
One of these was the 2009 Le Hauts de Pontet-Canet,which was particularly concentrated and delicious and being a 2nd wine,I think goes somewhat under the consumer's radar. However,it is from an exceptional Bordeaux vintage and I believe this wine is a very high quality claret.
These are my tasting notes for this wine in a vintage when Robert Parker awarded its senior sibling (Chateau Pontet-Canet 2009,also in the 2010 vintage and now considered by RP on the same quality level as a First-Growth claret) with 100 Points. The bottle was only opened and decanted half an hour before tasting:-

"Beautifully scented nose of raspberries and black cherries. On the palate...smoky,blackcurrants,black cherries, tar - a rich and powerful wine, great concentration of fruit, with a wonderfully seamless balance and finish.Currently drinking "a point" and will probably hold at this level for another 5+ years".
(93 Points).

Topterroir. (June 2014).

A more recent tasting note on CellarTracker :-

"Followed another bottle over 30 hours. This wine is a chameleon with a fascinating development, mocking my earlier attempts to describe in a uniform description. The key element I am now noticing is metamorphic.First phase is tannic and tight, with typical Pauillac flavours of blackberry, cassis,a little raspberry, and some herbs, bay leaf, etc.Over 24 hours, the angularity smooths over and you get a 2009-esque creamy presentation of cherries, cola and spices. At 30+ hours the wine settles into this coffee and milk chocolate space with an aroma of violets".
(93 Points).
