Ronco delle Betulle is located in the hills near Rosazzo in the Colli Orientali (the bit of the Friuli region right next to the Slovenian border). The estate covers 10 hectares. It was purchased in 1967 by Giovanbattista Adami, and is now overseen by his daughter Ivana Adami. The soils of the Colli Orientali consist of a mixture of marl and sandstone, which is believed to be ideal for cultivating vines on hills.
These are very attractive wines. Surprisingly, for a region better known for its whites, it was the two reds that impressed me the most.
Brilliant cool climate red with great balance. The 2010 has a deep red/black colour. Lovely nose is vivid, mineralic and leafy edged, with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit. Savoury, leafy fruit on the palate. Pure and concentrated with an attractive chalky minerality.
