Description

The El Pison vineyard is set in a natural amphitheatre. A relatively light top-soil soon gives way to rock, which descends for up to 1.5 metres, defying the vines’ roots to dig deep and providing natural humidity and in-built temperature control. The 1945 vines yield a nose that is both ethereal and richly evocative, and a palate which, even in youth, is harmonious and finely balanced.

Spicy and firm on the finish, this is surely one of the finest statements of Tempranillo that one is ever likely to find.

Robert Parker 96 points
El Pison is a 100% Tempranillo cuvee produced from a single vineyard planted in 1945. The soil is pure limestone, yields are a lowly 18-22 hectolitres per hectare, and the wine is aged for 18-24 months in French oak. The rich, profound 2000 El Pison boasts a dense ruby/purple colour as well as full body, tremendous precision, and layers of sweet strawberry, cherry, raspberry, and black currant fruit intermixed with mineral, subtle wood, and flower notes. Drink it now and over the next 15 years.
Wine Advocate (145), February 2003

Stephen Tanzer 94 points
Deep ruby-red. Bright, minerally aromas of raspberry, violet and mocha. Dense, fat and silky but also succulent, with impressive volume leavened by the wine's mineral spine. Very sexy, fresh wine of considerable class. Finishes very long and suave, with less overt oakiness.
