Description

Biondi-Santi is one of the world’s most revered producers and is more or less the founder of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. They remain to this day as arguably the most prestigious producer in the region.
The Greppo estate, which lies on the hills to the southeast of Montalcino, dates back to the 19th century and for part of the following century, Biondi-Santi were the only commercial producer of Brunello. The estate is known for its unswerving adherence to traditional production methods, using long fermentations with native yeasts and ageing periods. For their Brunellos this is in resin-lined cement tanks, while the riserva is fermented in wooden vats. Large Slavonian oak is primarily used for maturation, as well as a few barrels dating back to the 19th century.
Whilst traditionalist in the winery, the family has been instrumental in driving quality forward in Tuscany through the development of their own clone (BBS11), following extensive vineyard research with the University of Florence in the 1970s. The entire vineyard was replanted with BS11 and the vines are now classified by age. The riserva is produced only in outstanding vintages from vines over 25 years old, with the fruit from 10-25 year old vines being used for the Brunello and the younger vines, between 5 and 10 years, produce the estate’s Rosso di Montalcino.
Speak to more or less any winemaker in Montalcino and they will invariably mention Biondi-Santi, and with some reverence. This is the Godfather of Brunello estates.
This is an excellent vintage, that celebrates 100 years from the release of one of the historical vintages produced by the family, the Brunello Biondi Santi Riserva 1888.
The longevity of a Brunello Biondi Santi Riserva can reach over 50 years obtaining great evolutions, if aged properly in bottle.

The value of this bottle is approximately 3200,00 euro.
