A golden era for Beychevelle, the wine started off great. The showy nose with its stacks of tobacco, ash, leaf, cedar and smoke stood out. But on the palate, the wine faded a bit too quick, which was too bad, as the tannins were soft, and fruit bore the touch of an obviously sunny vintage. This is not a wine to age any longer.

Another Dinner with José (Biaggi's Naperville): Medium-light garnet-ruby color. Ample sweet and very delicate fruit, rose petal and tea leaf, also a bit of tobacco and soy. Not fresh by any means, but clean with no dirty barnyard notes. Overall a very pleasant wine, light-bodied, showing a feminine elegance. A pristine bottle reconditioned at the Chateau in 2000, a fact not disclosed at time of purchase. This didn't show strong evidence of refreshing, but had clearly been topped up with something, given the solid neck fill. Chateau would not respond to my inquiry.
