Château Cheval-Blanc's origins are lost in the mists of time. The origins of the name remain apocryphal despite numerous inquisitions over the years. One myth is that it marks the location of a post house where Henry IV changed horse...or perhaps not? The estate has long had the honour of belonging to the group of the eight greatest growths in Bordeaux, and owes its fame to its remarkable soil.
Continuous quality-oriented family management through the years resulted in a tradition of excellence. When the Saint Emilion classification took place in 1954, Cheval-Blanc was one of only two properties deemed worthy of its highest echelon: Premier Grand Cru Category "A"
