Description

Wine Spectator Wine of the Year 2001

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1989 from Château de Beaucastel, Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 1991, is considered by many to be a benchmark of quality for the appellation.
Recently, senior editor James Molesworth, lead taster for the wines of the Rhône Valley, had a chance to taste the 1989 non-blind at the domaine. The original review rated the wine at 97 points and the wine has aged well according to Molesworth's recent tasting note posted on WineSpectator.com: "Gorgeous truffle, bacon fat, cedar, shaved vanilla bean and saucisson notes, but the fruit is still fresh, with currant, date and fig flavors followed by a long clove- and sandalwood-infused finish. A great showing, and from half-bottle to boot. Drink now through 2017. 98/100 points." June 2007

So delicate and perfumed and yet still well structured on the palate. Seems much younger than the 1990. Graceful, silky, juicy and lingering and hardly any undergrowth or leather as yet. A beautiful wine.Jancis Robinson, Note : 18.5/20, 2010-10-17

The 1989 is inkier/purple in color than the 1990, with an extraordinarily sweet, rich personality offering up notes of smoke, melted licorice, black cherries, Asian spices, and cassis. Full-bodied and concentrated, it is one of the most powerful as well as highly extracted Beaucastels I have ever tasted. It requires another 3-4 years to reach its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for at least two decades. Robert Parker Wine Advocate, Note : 97/100, 2003-01-01
Perhaps the greatest Beaucastel ever produced. Has the class and structure of a great vintage of Mouton-Rothschild. Deep, inky in color, with intense herb, plum, game and spice aromas, this full-bodied wine has an explosion of fruit and an iron backbone. Wine Spectator, Note : 97/100, 1991-10-15

Perfectly medium ruby in the glass, this wine smells of bacon fat, cedar, and garrigue, with a hint of redcurrant fruit. In the mouth gorgeous flavors of exotic woods, smoked meats, raspberries, cherry and wet stones swirl in a beautiful melange. Incredible breadth and length, with a phenomenal seamlessness and balance. Stunning mineral and cedar finish. Vinography, Note : Between 9.5/10 and 10/10.
