Description
I have for sale one bottle of Chateau Margaux 1988 which is in impeccable condition as you can see from the photos.
A fine mature first growth from a very good vintage over shadowed by 1989 and 1990 and as such offering excellent value in comparison.

Wow. Wonderfully fresh, with currant, blackberry and flowers on the nose. I just want to keep on smelling it. Full-bodied, with ultravelvety tannins and loads of berry and chocolate character. Dense and firm. Big wine, muscular. Drinkable now, but it's going to get a lot better with bottle age.

Chateau Margaux 1988 served at John Avery’s memorial dinner this January was superb: lovely fragrance, smoothness and depth, fine and dry with beautiful texture.

Smokey and a little closed out of bottle. Decanted an hour. Vibrant with ultra fine integrated tannin. Long finish but this one is all about texture. Its a silk sheet on the pallet. Lacks the structure of a better vintage but this is an elegant balanced wine.

Occasional dinner group; TOP Bordeaux 1988: Extraordinary experience. Not because the wine was so extremely beautiful , but because it tasted still extremely youthful. In the bouquet there were dark and red forest fruits and a touch of barnyard. On the palate dark and red forest fruits as well, some spiciness and green bell pepper. The tannin is still firm and a bit drying with a lot of bitterness in the finish. Overall a still youthful wine and not really refined, but certainly more than ok. If I owned any I would wait until 2020 at least to see if more finesse would appear. Tonight I (blind) scored the wine 91 – 92, which is mediocre for a first growth.

Sweet dark fruit nose, subtle, a touch of mustiness. Great balance, some red fruit on the palate, tannin resolved.
