Description

A classy Pauillac and a classy St.Julien to compare

Chateau Pichon Baron 1996 Second Growth, RP 91 points " Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend ( about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple colour is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee and cassis. It is dense, medium to full bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure." April 1999

Jancis Robinson 18 points " Complete, very sophisticated. Dry finish, with lots of tannins well smothered by evolved fruit. Not heavy, very delicate. This is a vibrato wine that dances on the palate. Much more lift than most. Drink 2095-18" September 2006

Chateau Talbot 1996 Fourth Growth RP 89 points "I tasted this wine three times in January, rating it 88, 89 and 90 with similar tasting notes. The wine is close to being outstanding, exhibiting a saturated dark ruby colour, and excellent aromatics, consisting of black fruits, intermixed with liquorice, dried herbs and roasted meat smells. It is full with impressive extract , a fleshy texture, low acidity, excellent purity and a long deep chewy finish. This 1996 will be drinkable at a young age, yet keep for 15-20 years. Anticipated maturity 2003-2017." April 1999

Jancis Robinson 17 points " Bright crimson with some age on the rim. Sweet, mild nose, vaguely reminiscent of a malted milk drink. Full, complete, fully ripe and should satisfy both modernists and classicists. Chewy finish but lots of ripe fruit in the middle. Drying tannins on the finish. Drink 2009-20" September 2006
