Zachys Pre-Auction Dinner (Bar Boulud, NY): Unbelievably sweet and rich with a nose of licorice, cedar. On the palater dried fruit, underwood. Great.

Bordeaux 1961 - Mini Horizontal (Le Sommelier, Copenhagen): Cabbage and fart on the nose with a little coffee. Complex.
Fresh young fruit on the palate with an elegant touch. Coffee and well-integrated tannins.

Tobacco, truffle, cassis, earth, smoke, cedar, lead pencil, forest floor and spice aromas produced a complex perfume. Fully mature, the wine ended with a rich, full bodied, sturdy sensation of spice, earth and cassis. It's always a treat to taste wines that have hit the half century mark. At 50 years of age, when a well stored bottle can deliver the goods, that says a lot about the wine.

Dark with orange rims. Nose of tobacco, leather, and hints of cedar. Medium acidity but elegant with nice structure. Drinking very well right now. Beautiful texture.

"Simple" Midweek Dinner (Chinese New Year Edition) (La Bracceria, Greendale Avenue): First red of the night, and boy did this set the bar high - it is one of a small handful of the very best Bordeaux I have had in the past few years. Popped and poured, one sniff, and I went "woah". The nose on this was simply incredible - very Pauillac, very Baron scents of leather, tobacco, ferrous, rusty minerality, funky earth and slightly sauvage animal tones were mixed up with the most enchanting, feminine scents of perfumy flowers, seductive cherry fruit and sweet spices. If anything, the palate was even better. Superbly integrated, it just took over from the nose, with the scents on the bouquet sliding into a mouthfilling perfume of super pure, ripe cassis and cherries, flowers, more ferrous mineral and sweet plums. Absolutely delcious, super smooth, plush and soft, yet there was still a sense of structure under all that. A super-fine structure as well, with tannins that have completely rounded off and live acidity that made us all guess this as a wine of the 1980s. No one could quite put a finger on which year in the 80s' this came from though - and no wonder! This was so alive that it was singing all the way into a long, mouthfilling finish full of cassis with little wreaths of smoky tobacco. I was over the moon with this bottle.
