Description

I have for sale 3 bottles of Chateau Pontet Canet 2007. This is a lovely wine and is drinking nicely now.

Although cropped incredibly low at just 28hl/ha – so there will very little of this superb wine to offer this year – this was a wholly natural result of twenty years’ vineyard work along biodynamic lines, encouraging the plants to self-regulate their yields; no green harvests were done, and no leaf-thinning or other invasive practices were carried out. Sadly the preponderance of mildew last year did mean that Alfred Tesseron’s team were forced to use chemical treatments (for the first time since 2004), but this remains the most naturally farmed Cru Classé property in the Médoc. They have even begun to work the vineyard with horses in an experiment which, if successful, could see tractors replaced completely on this important estate. Intense on the nose, fully ripe and lush berry fruit; dry on the palate with an intense fruit core and layers of sensual complexity; the fruit is lush and almost crispy in texture, very balanced and classy, with great length. Wonderful wine, a keeper. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

Reviews:

Wow. Minerals, cedar, almost like warm stones in the heat. And then some spice. A wine that’s gorgeous, beautiful to taste now, but you know there’s so much more coming to it. Will be better in three to five years. But it’s already gorgeous – decant a couple hours in advance.

By and large consistent with previous notes, but appears a bit more elegant, a bit silkier. Still slightly weak on the mid-palate for this level, but impeccably balanced and very approachable. A nice option when you feel like drinking young bdx without having to feel guilty

Vertical tasting of Pontet Canet 2003-2012. Less purple than the 2006, but dark, no discolouration. On the nose some creamy oak, dark fruit again, some green bell peppers. Drying tannins on the palate, a bit hard without the generosity of the vintages before. Maybe most similar to the 2004. A bit green with bright acidity. Nice length. It seems that this also needs a bit more time. 90-91+

SWADE WROTE: 92 Points
Open and followed for eight hours. Effusive black fruit aromas. Lovely. Classic crieme de cassis, lead pencil and cedar. The mouth feel is ridiculous - creamy and polished. This is so caressing. The down vintage shows in the finish length and flavor depth, but this is remarkable. 92

J STOKES LIKES THIS WINE: 93 Points
Dark wine, garnet at the rim. Beautiful nose of plumbs, blackberries and vanilla. Nice silky tannins with toasted oak, plumb and cassis. A really interesting finish, a long one, with flavours that develop into an almost floral taste.

This wine is good...again another 2007 that drinks well...who says it was a bad year? Some of the most special wines that I have shared are from 2007. Keep them coming.
