Description

A rare opportunity to buy a mature mini-vertical of this wine from Domaine Gauby. Gauby, often touted as the leading producer in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, produces this ageworthy Vieilles Vignes cuvée from a blend of old vine Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

In his book "The Great Wines of France" Clive Coates comments "The Cotes du Rousillon Vieilles Vignes is an impressive wine: complex, minerally, balanced and pure. With fine acidity and very good tannins it is a Midi wine of real class. In the best of vintages, like a good claret, it needs 10 years."

The 2004 vintage was awarded 18/20 by La Revue Du Vin De France and the 2003 scored 17/20. I can find no score from La Revue for the 2001, but this note is from Coates:

"Fine colour. The nose is still a little closed-in, but there is a lot of substance. Fullish. Tannic. Vigorous. Very good grip. Bigger than the 2000. More backbone. This is better. Very long. Lots of potential. Very fine indeed. 2012-2035+."

(For those unfamiliar with Coates idiom, "very fine indeed" is extremely high praise!).
