Description

Natural Wine Collection

Jean-Francois Nicq’s vineyards lie only 10 km’s from the sea, on schist, gneiss and ancient granitic soils. Years of drought have forced vine roots deep in search of ground water which means some ridiculously low yields. Good news for the happy drinker though - concentration and exuberant fruit at what is a relatively bargain price given how little is produced. The fresh sea breeze keeps things cooler so that his wines never show the sometimes unwieldy alcohol levels which are sometimes found here. He only bought this property in 2002, adding a further two hectares to the existing ten and converting to organic viticulture almost immediately. He is similarly laudable in the winery, working without any sulphur at all, not filtering or fining and using only natural yeasts. The results, across the range, are the sorts of wines which make us rejoice at being in this industry. Utterly pure, fresh red and black berry fruit with an edge of raw spice and undergrowth. This is astonishingly easy to drink without being easy drinking – there is far too much complexity for the latter. We are finding increasingly that it is wines made utterly naturally like this which are all we want to drink, with flavours and textures that linger in the memory long after the bottle is finished.

Contains no (or very little) added sulphur
