Description

Domus Aurea has occupied a leading role in Chile’s recent wine history, appealing to site-specificity, low yields and non-interventionist winemaking.

Clos Quebrada de Macúl Alto Maipo Valley, Chile Domus Aurea is a single hillside family-owned estate. Back in 1970, when it was unheard of in Chile to plant on the country’s more difficult to farm, lower-yielding vineyard sites. They planted a solid Left Bank Bordeaux blend, of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a mix of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Previously, harvested grapes were sold to the country’s top wineries; they soon became the most expensive on the market. The owners, Isabelle and Ricardo Peña decided to join forces with winemaker Ignacio Recabarren and a US investor to begin their own winery. Since 1996 Domus Aurea has occupied a leading role in Chi8le’s recent wine history, appealing to site-specificity, low yields and non-interventionist winemaking. In 2003, Patrick Valette and Jean Pascal Lacaze joined Domus Aurea as consultant and resident winemaker, respectively. Peñalolén is the ideal compromise between distinctive personalities and oenological care, yielding wines that are both accessible and complex. Wines such as these become an everyday invitation to hedonism. This is a single vineyard wine named for its location, a gravelly slope in the upper Maipo Valley. Low yields and hand harvesting indicate the care given to the Peñalolén’s superior fruit. Similar exacting standards extend to the wine-making process, with meticulous grape selection and aging in French oak barrels for 18 months. The individual varietals are analysed after they’re racked four times and blended with the goal of respecting the wine’s identity, rather than mask it with overwhelming oak flavours. The end product is bottled unfiltered and matured an additional 18 months before release.
