(Maison Joseph Drouhin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru Red) The nose here is completely different after the fireworks delivered by the Grands Ech with its reserved, backward, discreet red fruit aromas framed by a subtle touch of oak spice. Intriguing notes of game, leather and earth nuances can be found on the sappy, long, precise and focused flavors of indescribable complexity and what is perhaps the best acid/fruit balance of these '02s. Understated and supremely classy juice that is indisputably of reference standard quality. A simply gorgeous Drouhin Griotte and worth a special search to find.

The nose of the 2002 Griotte-Chambertin bursts with an assortment of candied cherries. Sexy, plush, and profound, its medium-bodied flavor profile displays copious quantities of red cherries, spices, and minerals. This rich, sensual wine has superb depth of fruit and a prolonged, expressive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.

9/20/2017 - MAXIGNY LIKES THIS WINE: 94 Points
Explosive nose of red cherry, smoky strawberry, white pepper, and sandy minerality. Something like pickled red cabbage (not the cooked or rotten cabbage that would suggest a fault), as well, adding a little funk and thus showing that this is from Gevrey. Eventually, I get a touch of lavender. As the nose opens, it becomes more characteristic of Griotte, with darker cherry flavors and a little gingerbread. Then, a slight black olive flavor and some charcuterie with a barbecue note, again showing Gevrey. After a few hours, some mossy rusticity.
Palate starts with slightly sweet red fruit, which becomes darker with time, also showing the smoke and pickled note from the nose. A touch of spice. Eventually, some salty animal skin. Like the nose, the palate slowly becomes a touch stemmy. Silky texture with well-integrated tannins (though some tannins are still slightly grippy) and lively acidity. Medium-length finish.

Drinking remarkable well. All class. Perfumey, spicy nose with hints of cherry and cocoa. Palate is so refined and balanced. Supple red cherry fruit at the core that is layered with soft tannins, and a beautiful balance of sweet fruit and hints of acidity. So good! The cherry fruit just lingers. After an hour or so, a chocolate notes comes in on the end. A joy to drink.
