Description

1963... if you believe what you read this was not a vintage that you would expect to be drinking well in 2015... even from the likes of Haut Brion ... however all rules are there to be broken! I can speak from personal experience having drunk 12 of these in the last 12 months, the last being a week ago with one of the top sellers on Bid for Wine who was equally impressed... and shocked!

The story; I bought 6 of these a year ago, tried one and went back to the seller and purchased the rest of what he had, another 18 bottles. He had inherited these from his grandfather (I think) who had passed away in Belgium and left his house and the contents of his impressive wine cellar to him. This wine was not chateau bottled, hence the label and every bottle being different but had laid undisturbed in his natural cellar for over 50 years. The result of this has contributed to the contents being quite remarkable in 2015! The bottler has embossed the capsule with a crown.

The bottles are nearly all hand rolled, not moulded and therefore no seams. They have been dated to the late 1800's are different shapes and not uniform, some don't even stand up straight, they 'wobble' on a flat surface! The 'punt' (indented base of the bottle) is exceptionally deep on some of them and the empty bottles themselves are valuable. I've been told about £20 - £30 each! See my 'empties' pic !

Anyway the wine itself still has plenty of life, the colour and viscosity is amazing, with no bricking and after 3-5 hours breathing is a pleasure to the pallet. My advice after drinking a dozen of these is don't decant, open, pour a taster and leave the rest for 4 hours or so, then enjoy! Most of the corks have been extracted complete but a couple have collapsed or pushed in but don't despair if this happens the wine has been equally as good.

I have put a reserve on these two bottles, but nothing like the average price of £673 plus tax per bottle that you will find on w/s.

Happy bidding.
