Description

A candidate for the greatest Syrah EVER produced. The '61 holds arguably even greater legendary status, but with its five-figure price tag, it makes this equally amazing but younger sibling look like a bargain - it's available on wine-searcher for, ahem, a 'mere' £1250.

This wine has been awarded 100/100 from Parker no less than 4 times (most recently in 2015) who described it as "truly magnificent" and "about as great a bottle of Syrah as one is ever going to find". He compares it to Latour '61.

This particular bottle was unearthed in the cellar of a grand old house last year. Sadly the owner of the bottle (and, presumably, the house) passed away without getting to enjoy his treasure. All the bottles therein were a little damp on the outside with perished labels and deposits on the capsule, but the contents have been consistently fabulous. I'm afraid i don't have a report for another bottle of '78 Chapelle (there were only 2 and the the other one isn't for sale!), but other wines from the 70s including some DRC Romanee-St Vivant and various Bordeaux have been amazingly well preserved. Evidently conditions in the cellar would very good for long term ageing.

The bottle on sale here has a very respectable level, the usual deposits on the capsule which otherwise feels solid, and a better label than most from this cellar. Overall I reckon this looks pretty good.

If you think you've seen this bottle on Bid for Wine in the past, you're not going mad. I sold this same bottle in May 2017, but the buyer never collected it or sent delivery instructions. I've laboured to make contact with them, but to no avail. Re-offered in good conscience.

Inspection welcome prior to the auction closing. The bottle is in central London. Text/call 07787 537888 to arrange.

No reserve - bonne chance!!
