PARKER'S TASTING NOTES:
Wine Advocate # 95 Oct 1994 Robert Parker 100
Drink: 1994 - 2024
Tasted 8 Times With Consistent Perfect Ratings
Although the 1947 Cheval Blanc is widely considered to be the "wine of the century" among collectors, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol also merits a share of the title. Giving points to a wine such as this makes one think of Shakespeare's reflection that "comparisons are odious." To put it mildly, this wine is "off the charts." If I had only one Bordeaux to drink, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol would have to be at the top of my list. Given its phenomenal richness and amazing precision and balance, it can bring tears to one's eyes. Still a saturated dark purple color with no signs of amber, orange, or rust, the nose offers extraordinarily rich, intense aromas of jammy plums, blackcurrants, licorice, and truffles. Port-like, with remarkable viscosity and thickness, as well as a finish that lasts for more than a minute, this wine is in a class by itself. Even greater than the 1961 Petrus and 1961 Latour (two perfect wines), it is phenomenal. Given its youthfulness (it is the least evolved wine of the vintage), it has the potential to last for another 20-30 years.

Although the 1947 Cheval Blanc is widely considered to be the "wine of the century" among collectors, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol deserves that title. Giving points to a wine such as this makes one think of Shakespeare's famous comment that "comparisons are odious." To put it mildly, this wine is "off the charts." If I had only one Bordeaux to drink, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol would have to be at the top of my list. Even greater than the 1961 Petrus and 1961 Latour (two perfect wines), it is phenomenal. I had it on three occasions this year and I was blown away each time. Given its youthfulness (it is the least evolved wine of the vintage), it has the potential to last for another 20-30 years.

Robert Parker 100 Drink: 1992 - 2022 (Magnum) Last Tasted 10/92
I have consistently given this wine perfect scores. This was the first time I tasted it from a magnum. It is an unbelievable wine. In style, it is more port-like than other 1961s. Its viscous, unctuous texture is reminiscent of such great 1947 right bank wines as Cheval Blanc and Petrus. The fruit blasts from the glass with an intense, multi-dimensional bouquet of roasted nuts, jammy currants, and exotic spices. Super-concentrated, with a density to and extraction of fruit that are astonishing, the wine finishes with a viscous, sweet, coffee/chocolate/cassis flavors that last over a minute. The wine is also extremely alcoholic (I suspect 14.5-15%), but the fruit is so ripe and concentrated that the alcohol is less noticeable. This wine has been gorgeous to drink for over a decade, yet it shows no signs of decline. If I were ever in the position of having only one more wine to drink in my life, I am beginning to think this would have to be it.

Robert Parker 100 Drink: 1992 - 2022 Last Tasted 3/92
Clearly one of the greatest wines of this splendid vintage, the 1961 Latour a Pomerol displays a formidable nose of sweet oak, black fruits, a thick, viscous texture, and mind-boggling richness and length. At age 32, it is still amazingly young and tasty. Drink it over the next 25-30 years. A legend!

Increasingly difficult to come by, in-fact having searched wine-searcher and 'google' I have been unable to find another bottle actually for sale (and available) in the UK.
