Description

Two bottles of mature Barolo from a very good producer.

Reviewed by Parker back in 2001 when scores less than 90 points were still good!:
"This wine is closed at present, so it ultimately may merit an even higher rating. The 1997 Barolo La Serra exhibits a dark ruby color in addition to Barolo's tell-tale bouquet of rose petals, black cherries, and balsam wood with hints of underbrush/tobacco. There is good ripeness, medium to full body, moderately high tannin, and a firm but traditionally-styled finish with no evidence of new oak. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2014. 88 points."

Two good 2015 reviews on Cellartracker:

4/5/2015 - Nutty08 Likes this wine: 91 Points

This seemed to show best as a pop and pour, as the nose faded with 4hr decant. Very expressive upon opening--leather and sweet underlying fruit. Not particularly tannic and finish was shorter than expected. Seemed mature--though I am new to Barolo.

This is the second bottle opened within 1 week, the other a few days ago having been clearly over the hill and stale. This second bottle was markedly different. Dark ruby red with minimal bricking at the edge. Characteristic mature Barolo nose, mushrooms, black fruits and decidedly gamey. Very attractive. This wine won't get any better but judging from this second bottle it should hold for another year or two.
