Description

Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes
17/20
70% Grenache Noir, 15% Carignan, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, planted on steep schist or slate slopes at an altitude of 200-300 m above sea level. Harvested in August 2005 with a yield of just 18 hl/ha. The grapes were hand-sorted, destemmed but not crushed. Indigenous yeast fermentation at 24°C over 14 days with gentle foot-treading. Malolactic in French oak and 90% matured for 20 months in 500 l demi-muid, French oak, 20% new, remaining 10% in 228 l Burgundy pièces, none new. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans. TA 6.57 g/l, pH 3.30, RS 1.4 g/l.

JH for Jancis Robinson Purple Pages

Spicy, lifted on the nose by a clear note of volatility, surprising in this wine (I usually find Matassa reds and whites on the happily reductive side). Lovely fine texture and depth, a little meaty and surprisingly savoury. Vestiges of firm tannin. I might have put this in Italy in a blind tasting. Delicious freshness and no sign of heat even at 13.5%. (JH) 17/20
